WP3: Proxy vs. trait discrimination

WP3 investigates empirically whether cases of discrimination based on a certain trait are driven by discrimination based on proxies for that trait or by that trait itself and examines the philosophical implications of this distinction. Combining theoretical analysis with empirical methods, WP3 critically assesses the use of audit studies and tests how different understandings of proxy versus trait discrimination affect how cases are classified. This project builds on an experimental study by Kruse et al. (R&R) which suggests that much of what is generally thought of as race discrimination involves differential treatment based on proxies for race rather than race as such (however that distinction is drawn).
