WP10: Affirmative action

Affirmative action and reactions to mitigation

WP10 identifies the conditions and strategies under which affirmative action is effective and accepted as a discrimination-mitigation instrument. Using philosophically informed experiments, WP10 examines how different types of affirmative action programs—varying in design, target population, and context—affect outcomes, and it tests how support for affirmative action varies with different framings and justificatory arguments, with the aim of identifying strategies to increase public acceptance. Regarding the second aim, WP10 builds on earlier findings from CEPDISC regarding arguments pertaining to affirmative action (Bengston 2024; Bengtson and Munch 2024; Bengtson and Pedersen 2024; Lippert-Rasmussen 2023), as well as findings from WP9, to ask how support for effective affirmative action programs can be increased (Gothreau and Haas 2025; Haas and Lindstam 2024).
