WP6 determines which social mechanisms influence folks’ and philosophers’ judgements regarding what counts as (wrongful) discrimination. Focusing on experimental studies informed by theoretical considerations, the project examines mechanisms such as identity competition and tests whether such dynamics shape reported intuitions, including differences between experts (philosophers) and non-experts. It also investigates responses in identity competition-inhibiting and identity competition-inducing settings. Building on prior CEPDISC work, e.g. research on everyday sexist speech acts (Lippert-Rasmussen forthcoming) and Lippert-Rasmussen (2024), WP6 conducts a series of studies to assess how social dynamics affect conceptual and moral intuitions about discrimination and in this way expanding the scope of experimental-philosophical studies.
