Lasse Laustsen argues that Greenlanders are subjected to racism and discrimination by the Danish population in an opinion piece published in Politiken. Laustsen finds that the extent of racism and the use of derogatory language towards Greenlanders by Danes matches similar racism directed at other ethnic minorities. For example, around one in four Danes consider it acceptable to use expressions like “grønlænderstiv” (drunk as a Greenlander) to describe someone who is very intoxicated, and “hættemåge” (black-headed gull) to refer to a Muslim woman wearing a headscarf. Laustsen therefore argues that the acceptance of derogatory and partially racist language is a phenomenon that affects ethnic and religious minorities more broadly—not just Greenlanders. He believes this should prompt a certain degree of critical self-reflection on the appropriateness of continuing to use overtly derogatory language about ethnic minorities. The opinion piece was published in Politiken on January 16, 2025: https://politiken.dk/debat/debatindlaeg/art10242322/Grønlændere-oplever-racisme-i-Danmark.-De-er-ikke-alene (behind a paywall).
