Congratulations to Lydia Tsiakiri

On November 14 Lydia Tsiakiri successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Will Responsibility Save the Day? In Defence of Responsibility-Sensitive Discrimination in Healthcare”

Lydia’s dissertation explores whether allocation of scarce healthcare resources based on personal responsibility can be considered discriminatory. While there is broad consensus that such decisions ought not to be discriminatory, a pressing question remains: does differential treatment of patients who bear responsibility for their own condition constitute wrongful discrimination? The dissertation advances two novel arguments demonstrating that responsibility-sensitive policies need not entail disrespect or discrimination.

Furthermore, Tsiakiri employs survey experiments conducted in Denmark and the United Kingdom to understand public attitudes towards these issues. The findings indicate that individuals are less inclined to regard such practices as wrongful discrimination when those denied access to treatment or social benefits are themselves accountable for their circumstances.

The Assessment committee consisted of:
Professor Eli Feiring, Oslo University

Professor Ben Davies, University of Sheffield

Associate professor Viki Lyngby Hvid, Aarhus University

Main supervisor: Associate professor Andreas Brøgger Albertsen
Co-supervisor: Associate professor Troels Bøggild
