Title: Discrimination in Frontline Work

Speaker: CEPDISC Seminar with Assistant Professor Mathilde Cecchini, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University

Abstract:

Assistant Professor Mathilde Cecchini, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University and Associate Professor Lasse Nielsen, Department of Philosophy, University of Southern Denmark.

The literature on discrimination in frontline work typically understands discrimination as a broad and homogenous practice defined in general terms of differential treatment, and consequently understands discrimination in reference to gender and ethnicity, for example, as different instantiations of this more general phenomenon. In a similar spirit, the wide-shared political theory conception of discrimination defines discrimination broadly as one and the same phenomenon and takes it’s wrong-making features to apply equally for various instances of differential treatment. In this project/paper, we draw on data from an ethnographic study of frontline work in the Danish public school to explore the various ways and situations in which discrimination arise and manifest itself in everyday life. Our analysis indicate that frontline discrimination is not one and the same phenomenon but rather a broad category of social mechanisms involving quite different forms of stereotype articulation which, moreover, possibly brings forward distinct wrong-making features.
