Abstract:

In his talk, Marc Lynch will explore how U.S. ambitions for leadership and stability in the Middle East have instead produced cycles of war, instability, and humanitarian catastrophe — and what Gaza’s devastation reveals about America’s role in the region today. Lynch traces 35 years of U.S. policy failures —from Iraq and Lebanon to Syria, Iran, Yemen, and Libya —showing how illusions of control and moral superiority have trapped the United States in a self-defeating pattern that reproduces the region’s disasters in new forms.

Marc Lynch is Professor of Political Science and Director of Middle East Studies at The George Washington University, founder of the Abu Aardvark blog, and author of The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East and The New Arab Wars: Anarchy and Uprising in the Middle East.
