With support from the Augustinus Foundation, CFA has conducted a study examining value creation in Arts and Humanities Research.

With support from the Augustinus Foundation, CFA has conducted a study examining value creation in Arts and Humanities Research. Based on an extensive literature review and 29 interviews with central stakeholders, the report highlights how researchers in these fields often struggle to demonstrate the value of their work when this is evaluated according to metrics tailored to STEM-disciplines. These systems typically measure value and impact in economic terms – patents, products and profits – failing to capture the broad and complex forms of value generated by Arts and Humanities research. As such, the report points to a need for more inclusive approaches to research assessment that recognise the multitude of values created by Arts and Humanities scholars: new perspectives on societal issues, norm-critique, cultural heritage conservation, etc. At the same time, the report highlights the need for researchers to improve how they communicate the value of their work, with the aim of creating strong narratives that can increase support from funders and political decision-makers.
