What causes democratic declines, what makes it possible for democracies to emerge and develop further, and what are the consequences of democracy? With DEDERE, we set out to identify democratic deepening and regression, i.e., movements from less democratic to more democratic regime types and vice versa and to investigate the correlates of democratic development.

The affiliated researchers work on different projects that provide new insights on these issues. A common denominator for these projects is a comparative perspective, where developments in elite behavior, public opinion, and political institutions related to various aspects of liberal democracy are studied in multiple countries.
