KP Case

There is a long history of work with simulation in the health care profession, which has increased substantially in recent years with the development of the more advanced medium- and high fidelity manikins. This is particularly the case within nursing education. The aim of simulation is to help students in the transfer between theory and practice through training and reflection. As simulation has become more and more prevalent in nursing programs, there has been a growing need for knowledge on the effects of simulation.

The case study seeks to understand the role of simulation in nursing education and its potential effects on learning and skills development. The main questions that are examined are the following:

What are the effects of simulation training on knowledge gained, skills performance, critical thinking and self-confidence for nursing students?

  • Does simulation lead to greater learning in terms of didactic knowledge gained?
  • Does simulation lead to greater learning of skill competences for patient care?
  • Does simulation improve students’ critical thinking abilities?
  • Does simulation improve students’ self-confidence in their critical thinking and skills?
